VIOL CONSORT INITIATIVE (VCI)

Lisa Terry, Instructor

The Viol Consort Initiative, open to intermediate to professional-level viol players, will focus on all the elements that make up a successful, comfortable, enjoyable performance, no matter what level of expertise a player has obtained on the viol. Pre-formed groups with repertoire in mind for the week are welcome, but not necessary. All levels can work towards performance in a non-stressful way.

A $100 application fee is required. Applicants will be notified soon after the May 20, 2011 deadline if accepted as a performing participant or auditor.   The Auditor fee is $100.  Performing participants will need to send in the balance of $200 for tuition.  An Auditor is entitled to seating in all coaching and master class sessions of the entire Summer Festival, free admission to all concerts during the Festival week, and a free T-shirt.   Auditors enrolled through the Viol Consort Initiative may also arrange private lessons or consort sessions directly with Lisa Terry for an extra fee.

The course will be divided into consort sessions and master lessons. In the master lessons we will focus on technique and musicality of playing the viol for individuals and ensembles, including tips and tricks for hard bits; analysis of stage presence; advice on achieving balance and blend. No matter what your level on the viol, you are welcome to perform in the Master Lessons.

In the consort sessions, we will explore all aspects of creating a successful performing ensemble, covering topics such as score study, sharing group responsibility and leadership, giving visual contact and encouragement, counting and body language.

Mornings – Workshop participants are free to sight see, practice, and take private lessons from Lisa Terry for an additional fee.

Period 1 – afternoon (4 to 5:30 p.m.)

Master Lessons, open to all – LISA TERRY, leader

The 90-minute session will be divided into 3 parts; up to three individuals or ensembles will perform each day, and the other participants (and auditors) will observe. Proposals for a performance opportunity in a lesson will be required in advance of the workshop, at least for the first two days’ sessions; Lisa will fill the rest of the week’s schedule as the workshop progresses. Individuals or ensembles performing in a lesson will supply the observers with scores, and observers will be involved in the group discussion at the end of each lesson.

Period 2 – evening (7:15 to 8:45 p.m.)

Coached Consorts – LISA TERRY, leader; ANGELA YEUNG, coach

Workshop participants will be divided into matched-level consorts to prepare for performance. Pre-formed groups are welcome. Proposals for optional noontime series are welcome in advance of the workshop (both solo and ensemble). Thursday evening and Saturday afternoon performances are mandatory for consorts, optional for soloists, and will be decided as we work together throughout the week.

We will have up to three ensembles working at the same time dividing the attention of the two coaches; willingness for self-coaching is essential for workshop participants.
