“ADVENTURES in SCIENCE & MUSIC 2.0″ was the theme of FanFaire Foundation’s participation in the 2011 SAN DIEGO SCIENCE FESTIVAL.

Featured was a symphonic concert with a strong science flavor. The GREATER SAN DIEGO COMMUNITY ORCHESTRA, directed by Dr. ANGELA YEUNG performed music either inspired by scientific ideas or composed by artists who are trained in science as well.

The free family concert underscored the creativity born from the convergence of science and music. The orchestra, composed of experienced amateur musicians, many of whom have separate careers in science, played a concert program with a strong science flavor that included: Ottorino Respighi “Airs and Dances” which was inspired by music composed by the scientists Galilei Galileo’s father; the rhythmically ticking movement from Franz Joseph Haydn’s “Clock Symphony,” Anerican composer Brian Balmage’s “Petite Symphony: The Elements (Air, Water, Fire, Earth)” and the Polovtsian Dances from Prince Igor by Alexander Borodin, the great Russian composer and renowned Professor of Organic Chemistry who was among the co-founders of the Russian Chemical Society along with Mendeleev, the father of the Periodic Table of The Elements.
Dr. Angela Yeung, FanFaire Foundation’s Ambassador for Community Outreach, has a science background and many members of the orchestra have separate science-related careers –living proofs that SCIENCE & MUSIC not only co-exist but converge, exemplars of Einstein’s dictum that
“The greatest scientists are always artists as well.”
