Rules & Guidelines: Inaugural Competition for Soloists
in FanFaire Foundation’s First Messiah Sing-Along Concert
Competition dates: November 13, 2010 (4:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.)

The Sing-Along Concert will be accompanied by a full orchestra directed by Dr. ANGELA YEUNG, Ambassador for Community Outreach using Mozart’s version. Mozart’s orchestration augmented the original instrumentation from 2 oboes, one bassoon, 2 trumpets, timpani, strings and basso continuo to pairs of flutes, clarinets, bassoons, horns, and trumpets, three trombones, timpani, and strings.
Several singers will be chosen to sing one or more solo arias at the performance. A cash prize of $500 will be awarded to the best soloist.
There is a NON-REFUNDABLE application fee of $25.
Applicant MUST provide his/her own piano accompanist at the competition; otherwise application will be void.
Applicant may choose to compete with one or more arias from the following list:
Soprano arias
- Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion (Part I)
- How beautiful are the feet (Part II)
Alto arias
- Thou that tellest good tidings (Part I)
- Thou art gone up on high (Part II)
Alto and Soprano duet**
- He shall feed His flock (Part I)
Tenor arias
- Ev’ry valley shall be exalted (Part I)
- Thou shalt break them (Part II)
Bass arias
- But who may abide (Part I)
- The people that walked in darkness (Part I)
- The trumpet shall sound (Part III)
** Both singers must enter the competition for the duet. (A separate application form is required for each singer). Application for the duet will be void if a separate application from each duet partner is NOT received.
The winner for each aria will also be invited to sing the preceding recitative. Both winners and alternates are expected to sing the choruses (Part I only) at the concert performance to be directed by DR. ANGELA YEUNG. Winners will have the opportunity to rehearse with the full orchestra at least once prior to the dress rehearsal. All alternates must commit to attend one rehearsal with the orchestra, the dress rehearsal at the Neurosciences Institute, and the performance.
All singers who enter the competition will receive a complimentary ticket ($10 value) to the Sing-Along Concert at the Neurosciences Institute Auditorium in La Jolla, CA.
The competition will be held at the French Parlor in Founders Hall of the University of San Diego on November 13 (between 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.) and 14 (between 9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m.).
NOTE: Each applicant will sing for only about 5-10 minutes max. Once the application deadline (October 29) is over, accepted applicants will be notified of their specific time slot assignments so that they can plan the rest of their day. Although they may indicate their time preference on the Application Form, applicants are requested to keep their Saturday afternoon (Nov. 13) and Sunday (Nov. 14) as open as possible. Competition organizers will make final scheduling decision.

Results of the competition will be announced through e-mail and publicized on the FanFaire Foundation website by November 19, 2010. The prizes ($500 for the Best Soloist and Gift Packages for the runners-up) will be awarded at the December 3 Sing-Along Concert.
