FanFaire Foundation is happy to present San Diego harpist ALEXANDRA TIBBITTS in a series of FREE FAMILY CONCERTS to be held in February 2012 throughout San Diego County.
The solo recital performances. which are open to the public, feature music either originally written or transcribed for the harp. The program specially put together by up and coming San Diego harpist Alexandra Tibbitts covers five centuries of music and showcases the extraordinary range of sounds and styles of what the harp, possibly the world’s oldest musical instrument, can offer. Works composed for the harp include 16th through 19th century pieces by Spanish composers Antonio de Cabezon, Francisco Palero and Lucas Ruiz de Ribayaz, the German composer Albert Zabel, and the French composer Marcel Tournier as well as a prize-winning piece by the well-known contemporary British composer-harpist David Watkins. Harp transcriptions include an arabesque by the French Impressionist Claude Debussy and a tango by the Argentinian Astor Piazzolla. Ms. Tibbitts will complement her performance with informative and entertaining commentaries on the harp and the music she has chosen to play. Each recital is a wonderful introduction to the harp and promises to be an afternoon of music that is both ethereal and delightful.

ABOUT ALEXANDRA:
ALEXANDRA (Alex) TIBBITTS’ musical journey began in Davis, California, where she was exposed to musical theatre at age four and quickly learned to sing the songs she loved from that genre. By the age of six she started playing the piano and became increasingly involved in performing. Though she still enjoys singing and playing the piano, the harp has been her main instrument since she first started playing at age twelve.
Alex has studied with with mentors across North America from California to Washington, Utah, Georgia, New York, and Vancouver B.C., including Isabelle Perrin, Dr. Carrol McLaughlin, Judy Loman, and Julie Ann Smith. At San Diego State University, she serves as the Principal Harpist for the university’s Symphony Orchestra, Wind Symphony, and Symphonic Band. Her experience as a performer has recently inspired her to explore composing classical as well as experimental works and to collaborate with a broad spectrum of musicians in a variety of genres. She is thrilled to be able to share her passion for music with audiences of all ages on her harp, Francis (named after a certain Francis Albert Sinatra). Alex is continually excited by the new places her passions take her, whether it be classical music, jazz, composition and arrangement, or solo and symphony work.
