Jake Heggie laid claim to fame with his first opera, Dead Man Walking, a contemporary story of compassion and redemption based on the best-selling book and Oscar-nominated film of the same title. Commissioned and premiered by San Francisco Opera in 2000, it has since received nine other new productions and continues to be performed (more than 120 times at last count) in packed houses worldwide, from Canada to Australia, from Scandinavia to South Africa, making it perhaps the most performed American opera after Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess.” His latest full-length opera is Moby Dick which world-premiered to unanimous critical acclaim at the season opening of the new Dallas Opera House in April 2010. Co-commissioned by San Francisco Opera, San Diego Opera, Calgary Opera and the State Opera of South Australia, Moby Dick will be seen in San Diego and San Francisco in the 2012 season.
Heggie is also a prolific writer of songs beloved by such celebrated singers as Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Frederica von Stade, and Bryn Terfel. A recording artist as well, Heggie has a growing discography. His latest CD of songs, “Passing By,” with some of today’s top opera singers was released on September 14, 2010.
