MESSIAH SING-ALONG

The MESSIAH SING-ALONG concerts were community events that welcomed the 2010 and 2011 holiday seasons. Held at the acoustically superb Neurosciences Institute Auditorium in La Jolla (CA), both concerts featured the Greater San Diego Community Orchestra conducted by Dr. Angela Yeung, with the solo arias sung by winners of the Soloists’ Competition held in November.

At both events, Dr. Yeung directed not only the orchestra but also the audience, facing them while conducting them as, grouped into the different voice types (soprano, alto, tenor and bass), they sang the choral parts selected for the occasion. By prior arrangement, audience members who played musical instruments brought and played their instruments with the orchestra during the choral parts, cueing the audience as they sang the choruses. The soloists were awesome, enthralling the audience with their magnificent singing. There was no question but that these sing-along events were altogether a different, life-enriching and fun musical experience for everyone who was there–a GENUINE COMMUNITY EVENT!

The orchestra played Mozart’s orchestration of Handel’s Messiah, which augmented the original instrumentation from 2 oboes, one bassoon, 2 trumpets, timpani, strings and basso continuo to pairs of flutes, clarinets, bassoons, horns, and trumpets, three trombones, timpani, and strings.

Congratulations!!
That was quite an accomplishment for a first year Messiah!   I had been to the
Boston Symphony Orchestra one, but I think yours was more fun.  And many in the
audience were half-surprised when they realized that the “encore” included them
singing the Hallelujah again. But I think the effect was wonderful! Everyone knew
what to expect and I think  the  second time around, they were more into it.

Awesome job!

The foundation ladies did an outstanding job organizing it and other previous
events. Please send my congrats to them too.
