OUR COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAM

COMMUNITY OUTREACH is by the nature of the organization the essence of FanFaire Foundation’s activities, beginning with its very first activity which was sponsored by and presented in partnership with FanFaire.com – the webzine that celebrates MUSIC within only a month of establishment as a nonprofit organization. Its Outreach programs are designed to bring throughout the year life-enriching varieties of musical experience to people of all ages in the Greater San Diego area. Often undertaken in collaboration with community institutions with a strong interest in music and science education, the program consists of:

  • K-12 after-school programs that seek to nurture creativity of the highest order among the young through activities that promote MUSIC and SCIENCE appreciation as well as link MUSIC and SCIENCE, two fields of human endeavor that demand great imagination and creativity, and
  • projects that encourage SIGNIFICANT community involvement.

To date, these PROGRAMS / PROJECTS include:

1. “Bring Kids to the Opera” – in cooperation with San Diego Opera’s Education Department, FanFaire Foundation which seeks to introduce students (from 3rd grade and up) and their families to the unique art of OPERA.

2. “Kids Playing for Kids” – featuring kids ages 8-18 playing solo and ensemble pieces to an audience of children and their parents at various venues in San Diego County

3. Free Family Concerts Series – designed to foster music appreciation among the public and, whenever possible, to showcase local talents who are also excellent role models for the young in the community.

4. Holiday Sing-Along Concerts – musical events that encourage active involvement by the community

a. Messiah Sing-Along Concert and Soloists’ Competition – held at the Neurosciences Institute Auditorium the concerts which feature the GREATER SAN DIEGO COMMUNITY ORCHESTRA; the Soloists’ Competition, open to ALL young and aspiring singers in the community, give winners the opportunity to sing with an orchestra (some for the first time) as soloists at the Messiah Sing-Along Concert.
b. Holiday Family Sing-Alongs – held in partnership with community libraries, such as the Escondido Public Library and Logan Heights Branch Library during the 2011 holiday season.

5. Music Appreciation Concert Series / Bring Kids to the Concert – presents artists of international stature to the San Diego community in a program format that through audience interaction with the performers demystifies the various forms of classical music; the program also awards free tickets to students in participating San Diego County schools allowing them to experience and possibly be inspired by top-notch performances by renowned artists in a world-class venue.

6. “Adventures in Science & Music” – features live musical ensemble / orchestral performances that underscore the natural link between science and music.

7. Lecture Series on Science and Music – the series seeks to interest, if not inspire, students to pursue careers in science (or music) through lectures delivered by practicing scientists (or musicians) in a classroom setting of middle, junior high, or high school students.
