The FREE FAMILY CONCERTS’ goals are:
1) To promote the appreciation of classical music among families in the community,
2) To present talented members of the community who can serve as excellent role models for young people, and whenever possible, and
3) To give local talents the opportunity to showcase their art to the general public and encourage them to strive to take their art to ever higher levels of performance.
The Free Family Concerts program consists of free one-time events such as:
1. FanFaire Foundation’s first free family concert was in November 2010 when we presented the GREATER SAN DIEGO COMMUNITY ORCHESTRA at a Satellite Event of the 1st USA SCIENCE & ENGINEERING FESTIVAL in association with Maritime/STEMfest at the Embarcadero Park in downtown San Diego. The orchestra, founded and directed by Dr. Angela Yeung, performed a program of science-themed compositions. A different but similarly science-themed program was presented as “Adventures in Science and Music 2.0″ at the 2010 San Diego Science Festival held at Petco Park on March 26, 2011.. Many of the orchestra’s members are professionals with separate science/technology-based careers,
2. The free concerts co-presented in 2011 with the Greater San Diego Music Coterie featuring the talented young winners of the Music Teachers Association of California’s (MTAC-San Diego Branch) CONCERTO COMPETITION Michael Chen and Adrian Liu (ages 10 and 13, respectively). They performed as piano soloists in concert with the Greater San Diego Community Orchestra. Without a doubt, the winners are excellent role models for today’s youth: both are budding young pianists who have a passion for MATHEMATICS and MUSIC, exemplars of the kind of creativity that FanFaire Foundation seeks to nurture among the young in the community. The concerts were these young peoples’ first opportunity to perform with an orchestra, a challenge they passed with flying colors!
The second component of the program is the FREE FAMILY CONCERTS SERIES, officially launched in August 2011 with a string of four chamber music concerts featuring the Orvieto Piano Trio, one of whose members, Dr. Byron Chow, is a practicing MD with a background in molecular biology who is also very active as a pianist, violist and composer. The concerts were co-presented by community libraries and the Music of Making Music. The 2012 SERIES begins in February with “THE HARP & ALEXANDRA TIBBITTS”, co-presented once again with San Diego public libraries.
Through the FREE FAMILY CONCERTS SERIES, FanFaire Foundation hopes to foster music appreciation by the general public and help grow the audience for classical music and, whenever possible, to spark a more than passing interest in both SCIENCE and MUSIC among the young in the community.
