DR. ANGELA YEUNG

DR. ANGELA YEUNG is Associate Professor of Music at the University of San Diego.  Beginning as a science major in high school back in Hong Kong with a passion for music, she chose music over science as a profession when she studied abroad, earning a PhD in Music Theory from Columbia University in New York City, a MA in Music Theory as well as a Concerto Diploma in Baroque cello performance with distinction from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec (Canada), and an honours BMus in Cello performance from Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario (Canada).

Dr. Yeung has performed as a conductor or cellist in major concert venues, reaching audiences on every continent except Africa and Antarctica. She is currently Director of the Greater San Diego Community Orchestra and Chorus, Principal Guest Conductor for The Chorale Singers in Jakarta (Indonesia), and a frequent guest conductor for the Guadalajara Youth Orchestra as well as the Tijuana Youth Orchestra, both in Mexico. She has been the Artistic Director of the concert series Early Music at Saint Peter’s Church in New York City since 1993, and was Artistic Co-Director of Orvieto Musica, an international summer chamber music festival in Orvieto, Italy from 1994 to 2005. She is a founding member of the National College Orchestra Directors Association and was President of the Western Division from 2007 to 2010.As a scholar Dr. Yeung has given lectures and papers on various aspects of music theory and analysis, historical performance practice, and history of chamber music, in particular the early development of the piano trio. She has transcribed and orchestrated numerous works, among them arrangements of Chinese and Indonesian folk songs for a cappella choir and with accompaniment, and music for a new genre of chamber music for horn, cello, and piano. She continues to offer invited guest lectures and seminars on a variety of music topics.

Dr. Yeung is passionate about reaching out to the community through music. A frequent clinician for visiting school bands, orchestras and choirs, she has conducted many outreach performances with orchestra and chamber music ensembles, and has directed many after-school music programs for elementary school children.

Dr. Angela Yeung conducted the Greater San Diego Community Orchestra and the San Rafael Church Festival Choir in a performance of the Messe Solennelle by Charles Gounod at San Rafael Church in Rancho Bernardo on October 10, 2010. The performance will be repeated at the Church of St. Mary Magdalene in Bay Park on February 13, 2011 at 3 p.m.
